Sadok Toumi, Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Communication Technologies and Digital Economy, has announced on Tuesday that “The Ministry of Communication Technologies and Digital Economy has set the end of 2021 as the last deadline for the launch of 5G licenses”.
Speaking at the opening of the regional forum on emerging technologies held in Tunis on April 23 and 24, 2019, Toumi pointed out that 5G technology will allow the rapid exchange of information flows at a speed that can reach 1 terabyte per second, in addition to extending network coverage and reducing costs.
He also said that Tunisia has so far granted 40 IoT licenses, a system that allows companies to store and manage their information online through secure servers.
With regard to artificial intelligence, he also stressed the importance of deepening the thinking on this subject in order to be able to exploit this new technology wisely.
On the other end, Lassaad Hamzaoui, president of the National Telecommunications Authority, stressed the importance of developing the current legal framework to adapt to new technologies such as 5G, the Internet of Things, Big Data, Cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.
He pointed out that the said body launched last March an international bid for conducting a study on the possibility and the technical and economic modalities of introducing 5G technology in Tunisia.
“This study will start soon and will be ready in between 4 and 5 months,” he said.
